"ALL THE POWERS IN THE UNIVERSE ARE ALREADY OURS. IT IS WE WHO HAVE PUT OUR HANDS BEFORE OUR EYES AND CRY THAT IT IS DARK." -SRI VIVEKANANDA He then told me that he had had a brief affair several years ago. He also shared with me, with great courage, that he had been a compulsive liar in his early life. Those sad seeds of betrayal blossomed into the perception of a wife who cheats on him and lies to him. Seeds always grow into something larger than themselves so, unfortunately, his wife didn't just have a 2 week, margarita-fueled lapse of intelligence. In the same way, the lies he told as child grew a wife who tells much more serious lies, with far greater consequences. But to the ignorant mind, the one has nothing to do with the other. It is not possible to evade your karma. Our thoughts, words and actions in the past plant inviolable seeds that blossom into the world we experience today. The power of each seed doubles every 24 hours. A tiny oak seed becomes a towering tree. The teachings say that even a moment of flirting with a committed man or woman plants the seeds for infidelity in your future. In a world of Carrie Bradshaws ( I haven't owned a TV in over 2 years....forgive me.), this teaching carries particular import . We must re-think our own behavior. It's not sexy or cool or fun to make eyes at the man on a date with wandering eyes (himself ignorant of where his world is coming from). It's ugly and sad. Most of all, it is stupid because it reveals a fundamental lack of understanding of how the world really works and where YOUR world is really coming from. It should call up a kind of revulsion in you when you find yourself flirting with a committed person, thinking its somehow 'hot'. Stop it. Don't be a spiritual idiot and spare yourself a future of people cheating on you, lying to you, leaving you. The teachings say you should behave as if the other person's partner was standing right next to them at all times. And vice-versa, as if your partner was standing next to you at all times, if you have one. Yeah, that changes things considerably, doesn't it. Everything we do comes back to us. Except much, much worse or much, much better. Be happy that you have this understanding. Whatever is happening to you, you did to someone else. There is no other way it could be happening.
