"The man who ignores the principle of unrest in things... is upset when confronted with the vicissitudes of life because he has not trained his mind to see things as they really are." ~Piyasdassi Thera (1941-1998), Sri Lanka
Everything changes. If you have not aligned your mind with the nature of things, that they have no nature of staying the same, then when things change, as they always have, do and will, you suffer. Your best friend becomes an enemy with a few unkind words. But we have been friends forever! Your computer dies...but I just got it! A wrinkle arrives...but I use Crème De La Mer! Your boss decides he doesn't like you...but I am his top-earner! Your wife decides the same...but we took vows! You feel sad...but I was happy a minute ago! On the other hand: an enemy can become a best friend with a few kind words. You might find a great plastic surgeon. :) The boss promotes you. Your wife returns or you meet someone new. A friend buys you another computer. Someone hugs you.
EVERYTHING CHANGES. Stop banking on things staying the same. Stop trying to MAKE things stay the same. It's futile, it doesn't work and it hurts you. When you can do this, all your suffering instantly lightens; after all, it won't always be this way. When you can do this, all your happiness instantly sweetens; after all, it won't always be this way.
